The Blend
Crisbee is a blend of soybean oil, beeswax, and palm oil. Larbee is made of leaf lard and beeswax. Our scented products also contain natural and artificial flavors, PG, and ethyl alcohol.
Why the beeswax?
*Beeswax is very stable for starters. As an ingredient in the blend, once used to season your cast iron, it will stay on and protect it from rust, mildew, and keep from going rancid. Samples of beeswax thousands of years old are nearly identical to new wax!
*Beeswax does not oxidize and it is not affected by mildew. Once you have applied the cast iron seasoning, storing your cast iron cookware in a dark, cool place for extended periods of time will not be an issue!
*Though you can find plenty of online articles and blog posts raving about flaxseed oil for seasoning cast iron, flaxseed is not the ideal seasoning for cast iron cookware (for further information, visit this link).
*Although nature may mean occasional visual impurities in beeswax, we use cosmetic grade beeswax that provides antibacterial properties.
*The foul odor when using different vegetable oils to season cast iron was the first incentive for creating Crisbee. The beeswax keeps the oils applied onto the cast iron from going rancid. Blending just the right amount of beeswax with the soybean and palm oil has improved both the bonding of the seasoning and the air in the house! Another incentive was to eliminate the sticky finish often found when using too much vegetable oils to season cast iron.
*Wax alone has been used for storing cast iron for many years. For the first time, it has been blended into a simple-to-use puck (and now Stik!).
